GSL Captains' Meeting 2001

The following are notes taken from the GSL Captain's Meeting held on 27 June 2001 in Meyrin.
Attendance
==============
Present: Representatives from Leptons, Quarks, Old Spice, Rowdies.
Absent: Representatives from ILO, Mission, Winston and Strawn.
Quorum?
==============
It was decided that, since a majority of teams were represented,
decisions could and should be made.
List of Responsibilites
===========================
The majority of the meeting was spent drinking beer and deciding
which teams would be responsible for which responsibilities.
Here is the resulting list:
Webmaster
-----------
Still up for grabs. CERN will maintain the current site at
(http://Softball.cern.ch/GSL). It is suggested, however, that some
enthusiast may want to check out the site at
(http://www.esportsdesk.com/leagues.cfm), as Steve has already
obtained an account:
SELECT A LOCATION: Switzerland
SELECT A SPORT: Softball
To administer, click on Administrator in the left-hand column
and enter:
USER NAME: gsladmin
PASSWORD: gsl?2
The site has a notice board, standings and schedule, etc. Very easy.
Anyone interested should volunteer. Perhaps someone from ILO or W&S?
Scheduling
-------------
Until the webmaster is located, CERN will maintain the scheduling done
my Maicci. Postponed games are pushed to the bottom of the stack.
SAVE AUG 4,5 FOR THE BERNIE TOURNEY AND BIRTHDAY BASH!!!!!
Mailing Lists
---------------
CERN volunteers to maintain the lists. The following lists exist:
cern-club-softball-gsl@cern.ch (the league)
cern-club-softball@cern.ch (everyone in CERN club)
cern-club-softball-leptons@cern.ch (the leptons)
cern-club-softball-quarks@cern.ch (the quarks)
Steve will remove league members from the CERN Softball Club list
in the coming days, as they only need be on the league list. The
lists are to remain open, but senders are asked to not abuse the
freedom. Anyone can subscribe or unsubscribe at any time.
Liason to Marines
-------------------
Dick Sim volunteered (previous to the meeting) to be the liaison
between the league and the Marines. This makes sense, as he is
the captain of the Mission team. We all agreed. All discussion
with the gunny should be communicated through Dick.
Field Maintenance
-------------------
Dick Sim has tentatively volunteered for this responsibility, but
would like a clarification of the duties. They are:
1. Preparation of the field in the Spring (renting roller, buying
dirt, organizing the work weekend).
2. Repairing home plate and the pitcher's mound during the season.
3. Purchasing and maintaining a small set of equipment.
It was suggested that we purchase a small amount of sand (2-3 m^3)
immediately for the batter's box and home plate. Recipe:
o The dirt should be dug up about 4" deep,
o sand and perhaps some cement powder mixed in,
o add water until mushy
o let bake in the sun.
Tools needed are rakes, shovels and perhaps a wheel barrow. We need
permission from the Marines to store the extra sand behind home plate.
Softball Equipment
--------------------
We need a volunteer to take care of the softball equipment. The bats
should be cleaned periodically and a list should be made to account
for their condition. The maintenance person would decide when new
grips were needed and when new bats or balls need to be ordered. It
was decided that gloves should be provided by individuals and perhaps
teams, not the league. Perhaps ILO or W&S could volunteer for this?
In addition, some window cleaner and rags will be kept under the porch.
The losing team from Game 3 is asked to make sure the bats are cleaned
and put away at the end of each Sunday.
Tournaments
---------------
A volunteer is sought to keep an eye out for tournaments and to coordinate
the ones we want to play in. Nobody seemed to want to do that this year,
so we will not be in any outside tournaments.
Public Relations
------------------
Andrew de Beaulac has volunteered to act as PR officer. He has already
contacted several magazines and WRG and the Bernie Tourney may me
broadcast in part.
Accounting
------------
Steve was requested to maintain the current account for the league.
Getting a completely independent account requires having a more rigid
league organisation, including president, vice, treasurer, and club
statutes. It was decided that this is unnecessary. The club will
remain socialistic, with teams volunteering for tasks. Steve will
maintain the accounting and provide a balance sheet once a year.
Purchases
=============
Reg volunteered to purchase the following using league funds:
1. First Aid kit
2. Mosquito/Bug Torches for behind the chairs
3. Window cleaner and rags for the bats
4. Charcoal, Fluid and Matches for the BBQ
Bernie Tourney
===================
The Bernie Tourney will be held on Higgs Field at the CERN Site in
Prevessin August 4,5. It will be a two-day tourney with all teams
playing on both days. Coaches are asked now to make sure they can
field full teams.
The evening of the 4th, there will be live music (Canettes Blues Band)
at the site. Beer will be on sale to pay for the cost of the band
equipment. All players are welcome to attend and to invite family and
friends. We will be celebrating David McDonald's birthday!
During the tourney, beer will be provided (most likely, free of charge)
on the site. Details later.
Charity
===========
It was suggested that some of the money go to a charity, as this
could be broadcast during the games on WRG. This would be very good
publicity for the club and would mean that our drunkenness went to a
good cause. We decided to think about it. Much depends on the cost
of the band's equipment.
Geneva Sports Association
=============================
Old Spice suggested we join the Geneva Sports Association. The cost
is 100 CHF per year. By doing so, we get publicity and may even get
money for projects. They can provide more details. This was approved.
Letters
==========
Steve will write another note to the league reminding them we are
guests at the Mission Field.
The team captains will write a letter of thanks at the end of the
year to the ambassador.
The meeting was adjourned when Reg nodded off.
