The CERN Softball Club, together with the family and friends of Bernie Sutton, are pleased to announce the second annual Bernie Tourney. The two-day softball extravaganza will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 24th and 25th, at Higgs Field in bustling Prévessin, France. Participants will include the six regular teams from the Geneva Slow-Pitch League who will be competing for the prized Bernie Plate, a hand-crafted trophy designed and constructed by local softball artist Paul Garritty.

Notes:

• All games will start on time. If a team has less than 8 players at game time, they forfeit. If both teams have less than 8, the game is cancelled and both teams receive a loss.
• Saturday's games last five innings. Whatever inning is being played after 45 minutes is the last inning. Any team intentionally stalling will be forced to drink warm beer at the BBQ.
• Sunday's games last seven innings. Whatever inning is being played after 60 minutes is the last inning. Any team intentionally stalling will be forced to clean up the BBQ.
• Sunday's ambiguity game is to determine the bottom two teams. If that is clear after Saturday, then no game will be played. It may be necessary to play two games, pushing the subsequent games back an hour.
• Home and Away for every game will be determined by a coin toss.

Bernie Sutton was the founding father of CERN Softball and one of the key architects of the Geneva Slow-Pitch League. He was a terrible player and an even worse coach. But, we loved Bernie and I am sure he would be honored to know we were holding a tournament in his name. Escpecially if there is a barbeque involved...

Grills are available on the CERN site. In fact there is a complete barbeque complex, including a pizza-making wood oven and a shelter. The complex is reserved for us from noon until 17:00 on Saturday. Anyone wishing to grill after that or on Sunday is asked to please bring their own grill to the softball field. Beverages will be sold at a modest price on site.

There is plenty of parking next to the field. Families are welcomed and, in fact, encouraged to show up. Parents, however, are asked to take care that children and other small domestic animals, stay clear of the playing field, to prevent injury. Thank you.

The point is to minimize misunderstandings and time wasted on arguments during the games.
